Statement by Strong Towns Chicago on ICE Activity in Minneapolis
Strong Towns Chicago exists to support communities where everyone can live safely, affordably, and with dignity.
Safety in public spaces isn’t just about better street design or zoning. It’s about whether people can walk, gather, and help each other without fear. That includes immigrant families and neighbors of every background.
Recent federal immigration enforcement operations in Minneapolis have resulted in the deaths of at least two civilians and growing concern over accountability and the use of force in public space. The events in Minnesota are the continuation of a nationwide ICE campaign that began in 2025 and has also impacted thousands of Chicagoans.
A strong town is safe, accountable, and inclusive. Investments in housing, transportation, and community resilience depend on public trust. Without that trust, our work cannot succeed.
Strong Towns Chicago supports the right of all people to peacefully protest and to speak out against injustice without intimidation or retaliation. We also stand behind the basic principle of due process of law: that every person deserves fair treatment and constitutional rights.
We will continue to work with our neighbors and peers to build a Chicago that works for everyone where people’s rights are upheld and their voices are respected.
