Join housing advocates from Strong Towns Chicago and Abundant Housing Illinois at the Zoning Committee meeting on June 4 at 10am for a critical subject matter hearing on Single Stair homes. This is a major opportunity to allow more homes in Chicago and lower rents: we want to show up in force and tell alderpeople that Single Stair will help fix our city's housing shortage.

What is Single Stair? Chicago's building code requires multiple stairwells in residential properties taller than two floors. Having two stairwells significantly increases the cost of building homes, forcing each unit to be smaller, worsening ventilation and access to sunlight. Thanks to modern building codes and safer materials, Single Stair reforms would enable Chicago to build more homes at a lower cost without sacrificing safety.

Never Attended a Committee Meeting? The Zoning Committee will meet in City Hall (121 N LaSalle) 2nd floor Council Chamber starting at 10 a.m. on June 4. If you've never given public comment at a Committee meeting, our advocates will provide messaging templates for anyone who would like to give a comment during the meeting, which we highly recommend!

There is no admission fee or RSVP required, but guests will have to go through a metal detector before entering. Please note that backpacks are not allowed, but tote bags and laptop cases are okay (there is WiFi access in the chamber, so you can work remotely). There are no lockers or storage areas, so please keep larger bags at home. Note that food and beverage are officially prohibited but sometimes officers will let sealed items in like water bottles and granola bars. If you've never been to City Hall, you can get there from the pedway from the red and blue lines without needing to go outside.
