ADA Accessible Transit (Or Not): An Intro to Accessibility, Transit, and Advocating for a Better System
Interested in transit accessibility, but not sure where to start?
Better transit starts with understanding the barriers people face, and listening to those who experience them. This workshop is a starting point for learning, asking better questions, and building stronger connections with people working to improve accessibility across Chicago
Join Strong Towns Chicago for an introductory presentation and discussion with Ky Lynch (she/they), a Ph.D. student in Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and a research assistant at UIC’s Institute on Disability and Human Development.
We’ll dig into the history, ideas, and real-world challenges behind accessible transit, including:
Disability rights and the ADA: How disability rights have evolved and what the ADA means for public transportation.
The social model of disability: How our streets, stations, and built environment can create—or remove—barriers.
Accessibility in Chicago: Where buses, trains, stations, and sidewalks fall short, even when they’re technically considered accessible.
Building a better system: How smarter design and more inclusive planning can help close the gaps.
Whether you’re a transit advocate looking to deepen your understanding or just curious about the subject, this is a chance to get beyond the talking points and explore what accessibility actually means.
No expertise required. Just bring your curiosity and questions!
