Legalize ADUs in Chicago—Act by Sept 25
On September 25th, the Chicago City Council will vote on whether to legalize Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) citywide—and we need your voice to make it happen.
ADUs (think backyard cottages and basement apartments) have so many benefits—offering seniors a chance to downsize and age in place, an additional income stream for homeowners, and an affordable climate-friendly housing option for anyone. But they won’t be legalized without strong grassroots support.
Take these 3 actions to help!
1. Sign the ADU Petition and Share It With Three Friends Add your name to show city leaders that Chicagoans want bottom-up housing solutions that fit their needs.
Bonus: forward the petition to three friends who care about skyrocketing housing costs.
2. Call Your Alder and Urge Them to Vote YES on ADUs Your voice matters—especially when it’s personal and direct. Use this quick script when you call:
“Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I’m a resident of [Your Neighborhood/Ward]. I’m calling to urge Alder [Name] to vote YES on Alderman Lawson’s ordinance to legalize ADUs in Chicago. This issue is important to me because of (one reason, housing affordability, the environment, family needs,etc.). ADUs are a smart way to expand housing options, support multigenerational living, and strengthen our communities. Please support this important step toward a more resilient and inclusive city.”

3. Show Up In Person on September 25th and Give Public Comment Even a short comment makes a big impact—bring a friend and help us fill the room!
Date: Wednesday, September 25th
Location: City Hall, 121 N La Salle St.
Time: 10:00 AM, but we recommend coming early. We would aim for 9 AM.
Please note, NO BACKPACKS ARE ALLOWED. However, you can bring a grocery tote bag or purse.
